SIGNS WITHIN THE VILLAGE OF BROOKLYN

The Village’s zoning administrator handles all sign requests. Requirements for all signage can be found in the Village Ordinances. Nearly all signs require a permit. The following is a brief outline of what signs are permitted within the Village of Brooklyn.

Sign Location

All signs must be placed on private property. Off-site advertising is not allowed in the Village

Style of Signs

Freestanding sign. A sign which is attached to or part of a completely self-supporting structure. The supporting structure shall be placed on or below the ground surface and not attached to any building or any other structure, whether portable or stationary.

Marquee (bracket) sign. A sign attached to a marquee, canopy or projection extending from and supported by a building. An awning is a marquee sign if it has a sign affixed to it.

Portable temporary sign. A single or double surface painted or poster panel type sign, or some variation thereof, which is temporary in nature, easily movable and not permanently attached to the ground. May be applied for once a year for a 35 day period.

Real estate sign. A temporary sign placed upon property for the purpose of advertising to the public the sale or lease of such property.

Roof sign. Any sign wholly erected to, constructed or maintained on the roof structure of any building.

Wall sign. Any sign that shall be affixed parallel to the wall or painted on the wall of any building; provided, however, that such wall sign shall not project above the top of the wall or beyond the end of the building. For the purpose of this division, any sign display surface that is affixed flat against the sloping surface of a mansard roof shall be considered a wall sign.

Sandwich board sign. A self-supporting A-shaped freestanding temporary sign with only two visible sides that are situated adjacent to a business, locate in the central business district, typically on a sidewalk, that contains commercial speech.

Application Guidelines

All applications must be accompanied with the following documentation:

Site plan sketch showing sign location, location of building(s) and other structures, location of property lines and other signs on the building or property.

•

Elevation drawings of the proposed sign

•

Text of the proposed sign(s)

•

Plans indicating the scope and structural detail of the work to be done, including details of all connections, guy lines, supports and footings, and materials to be used, if any.

Sign Application fee is $ 25
(Inspections of footings may need to occur for new permanent signs. Inspection costs will be added to the application fee).
